I find the best science fiction to be that which has its roots in real science. And like many others, when I read Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age I was introduced to the wonders of nanotechnology: the science of creating microscopic computers through the arrangements of clusters of molecules, and even individual atoms. It's a fascinating field, one still in its infancy, but in it is the potential to change our society like nothing ever developed before.
