Un Chien andalou

www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwy2iUa-l9s

The short film by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali. It's most famous for the opening scene, showing a woman's eyeball being slashed by a razor, but most people don't know that this film is actually really, really funny. Bunuel and Dali when writing the treatment threw out anything that could be seen as a symbol or continuity or anything of the sort, but folks still try to make sense of it. Bunuel himself said the film was a call to murder – and there are a lot of visual puns that seem to back that up (for example, the shot of the ants crawling out of a hole in the male lead's palm illustrates a french idiom that translates to "ants in the palms", which basically means that said person in wanting to kill; they've got an itch that can only be scratched by stabbing someone with a knife; sorta like the English idiom of "itchy trigger finger"), but that also seems a little easy.

This is definitely a must-see, and, hey, it's only 20 minutes long. I'm sure folks can take 20 minutes out of their day to see an awesome classic film.
