There were a line of apes. These apes would kill each other and eat the brains of their kills. However, this brain eating would cause the ape-brains to swell against the skulls, causing an increase in intelligence, brutality and sex drive, ultimately causing them to go insane. Man is descended from these apes; we've gained the intelligence, but also the brutal madness.
