The controversy over ordainment of women priests has been around for the entire life of the Catholic Church. However, this issue has recently come to the forefront, as a number of Catholic groups are taking matters into their own hands and ordaining their own women priests. This group, Roman Catholic Womenpriests (they call themselves "RC Womenpriests" for short), has been working for thirty years (according to their own account) towards allowing women to be ordained as priests in the Catholic Church. Their progress has been slow, but not entirely futile – in 2002 seven "womenpriests" were ordained in Germany. Immediately afterwards, they were excommunicated by the Vatican. But they haven't given up, and they've gone forward with another ordainment of twelve women in America in 2006.
