"A Peaceful Death is Everybody's Right" - Exit International's slogan

Exit International proclaims itself as "a world leading Volunatry Euthanasia and end-of-life choices information, education, and advocacy organisation." With a full time staff of 5.5 people (I guess that half of one person is choosing death soon??) and over 50 volunteers around the world, Exit International thumbs the nose to those who don't want to go gently into that good night.

Originally called the Voluntary Euthanasia Research Foundation, Exit International was founded in 1997 by Dr. Philip Nitschke, a medical doctor in Australia's Northern Territory. Dr. Nitschke successfully campaigned to have a legal euthanasia law passed, the Rights of the Terminally Ill Act. Up to this law's overturning, Dr. Nitschke had assisted the deaths of four people. Exit International was created to advise and legally protect those worldwide who want to end their lives.

Most "members" of Exit International are elderly (average age 75) with chronic illness.

Dr. Nitschke himself has been in the crosshairs of those that oppose him. In May, 2009 both Philip and his wife where detained for several hours in Heathrow Airport in London before giving a "right to die" speech. They were detained because such a speech might conflict with British Law.

Dr. Nitschke has written two books on the subject of euthanasia, Killing Me Softly and The Peaceful Pill Handbook.
