Phil Zimmermann is a hero to many people on the Internet. He wrote PGP, one of the most remarkable tools for personal privacy ever invented. (See Pretty Good Privacy for more details.) But many large groups hate the idea of individual privacy…and as a result, Zimmermann was investigated and harassed by the United States government over the course of five years. The official charge was that he had made the cryptographic design of PGP available beyond the borders of the United States…but in January of 1996, the government finally dropped its investigation and announced that Zimmerman had not been responsible for the spread of PGP beyond our borders. However, this affair is only one facet of the many faces of the struggle to defend the innocent masses – including YOU – from government intrusion on your right to privacy.
