Keen! A plug and a fight!

Actually it's really interesting, on both ends. It is interesting to see a film that was used as an influence/source; and for the record, where I think Funeral Parade of Roses was an obvious influence, I don't think Kubrick "ripped off" Matsumoto or anything; there are similar scenes, and, well, part of the job of an artist is to synthesize things from the world around them, and this can include other pieces of art. And I think that's what Kubrick did. Like, I don't know if I'd necessarily have used the word "lifted", although I've often used "lifted" in that sense too – where it's not necessarily a bad thing like "ripped off". "Lifted" seems to be more of a "Oh, that's where I got that idea!", where "ripped off" seems to be, to me, more of "I'm just going to steal that idea and maybe pretend that I thought of it completely originally, or hand-wave or something to that effect, and also, I'm not going to put any stamp or anything of mine on it." So, yeah, I didn't find it "disappointing" at all – I found it more interesting. (Granted, it has been a while since I've seen A Clockwork Orange last, but nothing struck me as a "direct copy" more of Kubrick saying "Oh, MAN, that's a good idea!", which I think is different.

(And I'd be interesting to see the thing about a Japanese film that inspired Full Metal Jacket too – never heard of that.)

Still, though – it's an interesting thread, and it's cool that they linked The High Weirdness Project page!

More links means more people looking at these pages, which is what makes me happy. You guys have put a ton of work into this place, and it deserves more exposure. As for Kubrick, no one can deny his genius and creativity – yeah, he had his shortcomings, but he was still a master. He certainly had little reason to outright "rip off" anyone, and there's certainly nothing wrong with acknowledging his influences. Check out Pauline Kael's review of Paths of Glory some time, and you'll see how another of Kubrick's influences was the great Russian filmmaker, Sergei Eisenstein.
