The Toolbox Murders

While certainly not as gory and violent as the paper sleeve leads one to believe, there is a charming sleaze factor to The Toolbox Murders that can't go unnoticed. Plus, there's a lady masturbating in a bathtub.

As 90% of you are fixated on that last sentence, I'll continue with the review. Apparently this movie is based on a true story, but I haven't been able to find any information to back that up. This leads me to suspect that the whole 'based on a true story' angle is like when the Coen Brothers said Fargo was based on a true story.

The premise of this one is that the single ladies in an apartment complex are being killed by a guy using his various tools: power drills, claw hammers, even a nail gun, which was kind of fun but would be later used more effectively in My Bloody Valentine (1981). I didn't quite catch the motive behind it all; I think it had something to do with the killer's daughter being killed herself? I don't really care, though, because no one really watches a slasher film for the backstory, let's be honest.

Overall, this isn't a terrible flick, and it certainly deserves a place along other slashers like Intruder, The Prowler, and the aforementioned My Bloody Valentine. The standout here is really the way the film is edited; there's some good use of quick cutting to create a feeling of suspense and dread. The kills are decent enough, but I wonder if there were some cuts made to get an R-rating, because it seemed that there could have been more shown.

Did I mention this stars Cameron Mitchell? There you go.
