Grave of the Fireflies

This is probably THE MOST DEPRESSING ANIME FILM OF ALL TIMES!

The movie begins with a lost, lonely, and…oh, in case I forget to mention, DEAD boy who starved to death during WWII Japan in the FIRST THREE SECONDS of the movie.

The movie itself is told through the flashbacks of the dead boy, now a ghost who's reunited with his sister, also dead.

Essentially the theme of the movie is The Futility of War And It's Affects On The Victims. Which it has no problem conveying as it pulverizes your brain and heart with a somber, morose sledgehammer.

Does the story actually go anywhere, not really, it just tells the story of how the brother and sister ended up homeless, starving to death, and dead; leaving you with the feeling of having your vital essence sucked out through a swirly straw.

It also explains why most of the anime geared towards Americans is of the corny sci-fi variety, they've got stuff in that country that makes Lifetime look like Comedy Central.
