Committee for Skeptical Inquiry

www.csicop.org/

After years of using the name Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims Of the Paranormal (or CSICOP), this organization changed their name to the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CSI) on November 30, 2006.

The Committee for Skeptical Inquiry is the most famous of the various organizations of skeptics, disbelievers, and investigators into the unknown. Over the course of their history, they've taken a cold (some say cold-hearted) scientific look into just about every "paranormal" claim in existence, from "psychic powers" to UFOs to pseudo-science, and they've debunked just about every wacko theory in existence. These guys wouldn't believe your own birthday unless they did a scientific investigation to prove that you were indeed born on that day. Their insistence on hard, scientific evidence for every theory is both a plus and a minus for the group: on one hand, they're the best there is at "proving" the existence (or non-existence) of a scientific phenomenon. But on the other hand, they are condescending and sometimes unfairly cruel towards people and groups who exist on fringes of reason. Love 'em or hate 'em, you can't ignore 'em. CSI's quarterly publication, The Skeptical Inquirer, is required reading for anyone interested in following fringe groups, because it helps you keep an open mind and questioning attitude towards everything. (You can get on their snail-mail mailing list and receive a free issue of the magazine by going to their Web site and sending them your address.)
