War on Terror

Part 1: Sort of a 9/11 Non-Rant

I've been thinking all day that I should sit down and write something, just to let out what I feel about today, but I haven't had the will to do so. The urge hasn't struck, at least until now when the day is almost over. I find that even now, I'm just not inspired to write stuff about patriotism or terrorism or the Goddamn fucking TV vultures milking every bit of sympathy and sorrow out of this, the so-called "anniversary" of the day the Conspiracy gave us another reminder that we all suck.

I've been doing my best to avoid the pre-fabricated, canned remembrances being broadcast on TV today. There's a lot of good stuff going on, such as the reading of the names of the lost…but that doesn't even begin to cover the names of the ones who weren't killed, whose name will never be on TV, who were hurt and who continue to hurt. I'm not very impressed by all that symbolic stuff taking place at Ground Zero (even the name "Ground Zero" is pre-fab, a sound bite coined to mark the moment), however cathartic it may be for some.

I did hear that at Union Square in Manhattan, where the barriers keeping the public out of the area had stood for so long, many people are gathering today for what looks to be an all-night event that is completely spontaneous and unplanned. There is singing and dancing and political arguments and art and drums and chanting. That is something I'd like to see…and you can bet that we'll see barely a mention of this on any TV station or newspaper outside of New York City.

Everyone will be thinking and remembering in a different way today. I did my job, as I did on this day last year. And for me, I find the best thing to do is simply to think about it.

I, along with many millions, may not have lost any immediate family on that day; yet I lost many brothers and sisters that I never knew, and the tragedy came home to those around me. My Queen's best friend lost a close family member and was stuck in New York for weeks, so she has been feeling very bad. On FurryMUCK, there is a virtual memorial in place for two furry fans (who I never knew) who were lost when the towers fell. The CEO of my company lost a close friend of his on one of the planes, and so all day at work has been a day of mourning and remembrance.

And I'll not forget that on this day last year, many of you folks on alt.slack gathered on IRC #subgenius to make sure we were all safe and sound. Den Mother Magdalen watched over us and cared for us. And Reverend SexMortus saw it all, and he had trouble sleeping for months afterwards. We did our best to cheer him up and keep him going; I, along with many others, sent him what little I could.

And people say the Church of the SubGenius is JUST A JOKE. Fuck that. If there is anything in this Church that can truly be called Slack, it is the Slack that SAVED THE LIVES of a lucky few SubGeniuses in New York…because they were LATE FOR WORK. They weren't there when it happened, and so they are alive today. THAT, dear friends, is SLACK.

(Now that we can no longer call that day just "September 11th," what will it be called? "Nine-Eleven," perhaps?)

Part 2: The War Sucks

Well, it's official now. Saddam Hussein has "officially" defied President Bush's ultimatum to leave Iraq within 48 hours (and there are now only 30 hours to go). Dollars to doughnuts says the planes are in the air right now, and by this time tomorrow we'll be seeing flashy military-approved video footage of Baghdad under attack.

I'm certainly in agreement with the folks who've been saying that Saddam Huseeon is a tyrant, a murderer, a despot, and that his ouster is coming at least ten years too late. In spite of his whining that attacking Iraq would be an "attack against Islam," any action designed to kick that asshole out and hopefully sever a few of his limbs in the process is more than justified. If only there was a way to get him out without at least several thousand innocent lives being lost in the process.

So why do I still feel like shit because of this? Because even though the war is justified, we are still being lied to and used.

Dubya's primary objective has been to kick Saddam out of Iraq. We've all known this since the day he first announced his candidacy for President. We've been predicting a war with Iraq since his first day in office. He's wanted to do this from day one…and in fact, he HAS to do it. If he backs out and allows Saddam to get away, then his career is ruined and he will never be elected.

This is why the champagne bottles were popped open on September 11. The terrorist attacks were the perfect excuse to get the country riled up and behind the President in backing his "war on terrorism." This so-called "war on terrorism" has been used to do everything Dubya and his cronies have wanted to do: create the Department of Homeland Security, crack down on undesirables, and (especially) get Saddam out of Iraq.

If we had remained focused on our "war on terrorism," then we would have gone after the terrorists. They're still in Afghanistan and Pakistan – anyone remember Afghanistan? They're in Indonesia and the Phillipines, blowing people up and recruiting more brainwashed fanatics. We should have gone right in there and done things right, by wirking with an Islamic government to crush the terrorists and show the world that we can work side-by-side with Muslims. But instead, we're going after Bush's pet target and getting the entire Islamic world pissed off at us…because no one believes us when we tell them that we're doing this to "fight terrorism."

And they're right – this isn't the "war on terrorism" that we asked for on September 11th. It's more goddamn fucking politics, and it's yet another case of politicians and fat white men in business suits getting in front of TV cameras and LYING to us all, day in and day out. We know they're lying, but we accept it. We approve of it. We know that Dubya's going to get his war, no matter what, and all we can do is hold a few protests that make for a couple of minutes of good TV and nothing else.

So here we are, doing the right thing for all the wrong reasons. We're marching forth to kick a despotic, murdering tyrant out of Iraq, which is the right thing to do. But we're doing it not because it's the right thing to do, but because it's what Dubya has wanted to do since day one. And he and his cronies have lied to us and lied to the world to make it happen.

And they laugh when we say that it's really the CONSPIRACY.
