For a day or two several years ago, I actually entertained the notion of doing something similar – pretending to be underage and trolling online for pedophiles – bit in addition to it being a sleazy concept, I realized I'd have to be spending a lot of time with people I didn't want to spend time with, talking about stuff I don't really enjoy talking about.

Maybe I should take that impulse and run with it in another way – like creating what looks like a normal wiki, but when spammers get hold of it, it scans THEIR systems and injects a worm to send insults and threats from their systems to their local authorities and anybody else in their vicinity who might react violently.

Also there's enough actual law enforcement officers and paid agents trolling and doing the job. They don't need vigilanties tainting evidence and alerting suspects and violating people's rights.

Additionally the act of trolling and framing suspects can easily constitute crimes when they're performed by non-law enforcement officers, the least of which is solicitation if money is mentioned (such as offers to pay for air fare or bus fare and such) and no other end of legal problems such vigilanties would, I believe, face.

I'd like to think that vigilanties committing crimes while trolling for perverts would motivate the courts to dismiss allegations and indictments against any such pervert on the grounds that the suspect's rights were violated. But the truth seems to be that these clowns don't care; it appears to me that they accept it as enough if their victims are targeted. Indictments or investigations don't seem to me to be one of their goals; it seems it's enough just to make claims and try, convict, and execute their victims in the court of public opinion.

NOTE: Asscodada here. I just thought I'd mention that I was once on an investigative team that was in charge of reaming a illegal child porn collector. During the investigation it became apparent that collectors of that illegal material often use the excuse of "fighting against child pornography" to rationalize collecting child pornography.

I just saw an article about the founder in my local newspaper yesterday. (he's from the same state)
First thing he made clear: He hates children.
And honestly it seems he started this just to troll people for fun.

I suspec that's what actually happened - they found that they could get a lot of attention by trolling for "online pedophiles," and it just blossomed from there. My own opinion of PeeJ is that they're largely idiots who enjoy trolling the Net for even bigger idiots.

No doubt many have seen the Dateline sleazefest reality show "To Catch A Predator". There are many articles written about this series… tackling journalistic ethics issues, legal quandaries, and the ever important ratings game… not to mention the 6-figure amounts paid to Perverted-Justice each installment. For their "expertise".

All we get to see on the show are the backs of low-key PC operators huddled in a room. And of course the main PJ representative giving their spin "we always work with law enforcement" clap-trap. We've found on their very own forums that she admits to hearing voices and using anti-psychotic drugs.

What Dateline does not explain is Perverted-Justice's so-called "followup forum" where all anonymous participants are encouraged to phone, email, post flyers, and in any manner harass the targets whose chat logs are allegedly posted on their front page. All without an iota of police involvement. Friends, spouses, children, relatives, employers are not immune to receiving such calls. Real estate holdings, car license plate look ups, SS# posted, cell phone numbers reverse-look-upped… in short anyone who has access to confidential citizen data is rallied in mob fashion to help out. Not only that, but Perverted-Justice also displays a series of screen shots of webcam captures - of men exposing themselves. All this without appropriate age-check in place. So there are lewd chats ostensibly between an adult and a pretend minor, plus graphic sexual images. Not the hallmarks of an organization that is touted to protect children online.

Question Perverted-Justice's methods and you are labeled a pedo, pedo enabler, or pedo sympathizer. Be careful when speaking out against this vigilante group or they will utilize their well honed skills (they are aligned with a hacker group as well) against you. They have slammed journalists and other child protection groups which have voiced opinions that were not flattering.
